In a detailed report released this month, Main Data Group, Inc., looks at incentive pay plan practices in mid-size companies. Looking at more than 800 publicly traded companies, each with annual revenues between $1 and $5 billion, the report compared fixed vs. variable compensation paid to CEOs. The study found that 85% of CEO pay at the companies that were reviewed consisted of variable incentive compensation and that  long-term incentives comprised the majority of the variable pay.
